This is a brief history of the United States Air Forces 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron and the aircraft it operated during the Vietnam War. In April 1966 the 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron was activated at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Base under the 50th Tactical Air Control Group, on December 8th 1966 it was reassigned to the 504th Tactical Air Support Group at Bien Hoa, but remained at Nakhon Phanom with a detachment at Udorn Royal Thai Air Base, on March 15th 1972 it was reassigned to the 56th Special Operations Wing at Nakhon Phanom and was inactivated on on June 30th 1975. The aircraft that the 23rd TASS operated were the single engine O-1E and O-1F Bird Dog, as well as the twin engine O-2A Skymaster and the OV-10A Bronco, the 23rd TASS lost a total of 45 aircraft during the Vietnam War. |
