I crewed 02-B 451 from May 1970-1971. This bird had a sorted past. At some point before I was assigned this bird she required an entire wing replacement. The story I was told: "There were no B model wings in the spare parts inventory, so they slapped a A- model wing on her, and send her back to the flight line."
As a result of this "transplant operation" she developed a nasty habit. Whenever she came out of a phased inspection and required a FCF our IP grabbed a new bright eyed bushey tailed Lt. to go up with him. On return this poor new guy always looked pretty rough, and the IP would laugh and tell me, "we got another one chief!" 451 would hammerhead stall rather than perform a stall in a typical 02 manner. I also remember that I had to replace wing fuel tanks on one wing after a cowboy pilot brought her back after performing stunts with her. I knew what he had done, so it was one of the only opportunities I had to chew-out an officer.
We at Bien Hoa named our birds after "bands of the day" and I selected Spooky Tooth. It seemed only fitting since she played her fair share of the Psyops tape "Wandering Soul" over her large starboard mounted speaker. Also, more than a few Jimi Hendrix songs were played to Army "Arty" based on their mountain top fire bases while we circled overhead. Always brought a wave and thumbs up from "our brothers on the ground".
