 This is a brief history of the United States Air Forces 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron and the aircraft that it operated during the Vietnam War. On May 8th 1965 the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron was formed at Pleiku under the Pacific Air Forces with different detachments at different locations, on August 1st 1965 it was assigned to the 6250th Tactical Air Support Group(P) at Ton Son Nhut but based out of Pleiku, on November 8th 1965 it was reassigned to the 505th Tactical Air Control Group at Tan Son Nhut but it stayed at Pleiku, in September 1966 it was reassigned to the 14th Air Commando Wing at Nha Trang, on December 8th 1966 it was reassigned to the 504th Tactical Air Support Group at Bien Hoa but remained at Nha Trang, in October 1969 the 504th Tactical Air Support Group moved to Cam Ranh Bay, on March 15th 1972 it was reassigned to the 377th Air Base Wing at Tan Son Nhut and it was inactivated on February 23rd 1973. the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron operated the single engine O-1E, the O-1F and the O-1G Bird Dog aircraft, the twin engine O-2A Skymaster as well as the OV-10A Bronco aircraft, it lost a total of 58 aircraft during the Vietnam War. |
